Rick Springfield, soap opera actor, singer, Star Wars collector?
Rick Springfield made a post on facebook that caught my eye. Yes, I “like” Rick Springfield, and now I like him even more!! As it turns out, RS (this is what he calls himself on his fan page, so I’ve adopted it) is a huge Star Wars fan and collector. Calling it the “geek” him.
Today he posted a picture of himself with a very rare vintage Star Wars bootleg toy called Head Man, made from the unlicensed Star Wars figurine line called Turkish Uzay.
Also in the picture was a Darth Vader figure that Rick made himself! He explains that when he was just starting out, he would make these Star Wars figures and sell them to make a little extra money. Now he’s giving them away on his Rick Springfield and Friends Cruise!
From The Official Rick Springfield facebook page:
“The geek in me collects vintage Starwars toys and the coolest one I have is a bootleg (see top photo) called Headman who is so rare he wasn’t even in any of the movies. My buddy Doug Davidson just gave me a Starwars bootleg that I’d made 30 years ago (see other photo). I made these clay figures and stuck them onto mirrors to try and make some money at swap meets while I was writing Working Class Dog. Needless to say they didn’t sell (thank God the friggin’ record did.) So this is the RAREST of all Starwars bootlegs (population: 1) and it was made by a very broke Ricky back in 1979. We are giving this highly valuable antique (some would say ‘worthless piece of crap’) away on the 4th and final RS and friends cruise this November. So if you’re a starwars fan AND an RS fan, come aboard!!!
XO
RS”
Now, he even says himself that it’s probably a “worthless piece of crap” but if you’re both a RS AND a Star Wars fan I would imagine it’s ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure’ type of thing. If you’re a dork like me, you’d put it in a shadow box with your signed Working Class Dog album so you could explain to your mom everytime she’s over that the guy from General Hospital gave it to you and, no, Jessie’s Girl isn’t his only song!!
I really do like a few Rick Springfield songs. I went to an RS concert a couple years ago. I searched my old myspace page for a picture from it. This one’s my favorite. I also giggled at the caption I had found with it…
“that cool thing he does with the roses… sends the middle age woman into a frenzy! ..I’m not quite there yet, maybe if it was Eddie Vedder.”
